Learning the difference between the types of mascaras available can help women choose the best mascara formula for their lashes.

Mascaras can be confusing. It seems as if a new mascara formula arrives on the market every other week, each time promising a new way to enhance the eyelashes. But the confusion is easily cleared once the difference between mascara formulas is understood.

Determining Lash Type

Mascaras are designed with three types of eyelashes in mind: thin or sparse, full or short, thick and long. While it is possible to have a combination of lash types (i.e., thin and short or thick and short), the mascara user should decide which area they would like to most change, and choose a formula that works to correct that feature.

Looking objectively at lashes is important. Almost all mascara wearers feel their lashes are too short and not full enough. However, examining the lashes closely and honestly will help making choosing the best mascara easier and increase satisfaction with the performance of the mascara.

The Different Mascara Types

Though mascaras are constantly evolving, their basic performance remains the same. The following list of mascara types explains the differences between each formula:

  • Lengthening Mascara is a mascara type that works to add length to the existing lashes. This mascara formula is best for people with short and sparse lashes and short and full lashes. To create the most length, the user must apply at least two coats of mascara to the lashes. The best results for lengthening lashes come from lengthening mascaras that add fibers.
  • Volumizing Mascara works to add fullness. Many people easily mistake volume for length. With a volumizing mascara, the end result will be the appearance of thicker, more full lashes. This mascara type is perfect for people with thin or sparse lashes, regardless of length. Users should apply at least two coats of mascara, moving the wand back and forth as it is applied, to ensure that the mascara is applied to the sides of each lash.
  • Defining Mascaras work to make lashes that are already thick and full appear soft and natural. This mascara formula is ideal for people who want natural-appearing lashes, or for simply enhancing the eyelashes that are already there. This mascara should be applied with no more than two coats. Because the lashes are already thick and full, more than two coats can make them appear clumpy and cakey.

When choosing mascara formulas, it is important to determine the desired performance outcome prior to buying the mascara. Remembering to look at the eyelashes objectively helps to buy a formula that performs well and satisfies the consumer.
